Description

Saint Lucy (circa 283-304) Patron of the blind and those with eye disorders Lucy, whose name means “light or bringer of light,” consecrated her virginity to God. She refused marriage to a pagan suitor, dispersing her dowry to the poor. Her enraged suitor denounced her as a Christian to the Sicilian governor during the height of Christian persecution. She was arrested, tortured, blinded, and nally killed. Today, St. Lucy's courage is celebrated with festivals where processions of young girls wear candlelit wreaths in their hair as a symbol of Lucy's guiding light.
