Description

Cool to the touch and smooth, Soapstone (kisii stone) is quarried and brought to the surface by hand. Master Carvers creates the shape with precision, using basic hand tools. The stone is first cut using a hand saw, a panga (large broad-bladed knife) and "adze" (hoe), then reduced to the required basic shape using various sizes of knives (kisu). Women use sandpaper with water to get the smooth finish. Kisii Chora (Artists) create the design using water based dyes, and a knife to etch the details of the design.
