This is an activated charcoal (carbon) filter. It helps remove cooking odor from your kitchen.
Charcoal filters only last on average about 6-12 months. They contain activated charcoal which absorbs odor. While it will continue to filter grease, it will no longer absorb odor at some point depending on how much you use your hood fan.
