Description

Penguin Pottery Stains are a great way to add color to your clay, clay slip, glazes and underglazes. Our stains can be fired at all temperatures (low fire, mid fire, high fire). You are no longer constrained by what glaze manufacturers think should be the available colors! Our stains can be combined to achieve a huge range of fascinating colors!

This stain can be used as a body stain in porcelain at high temperatures but should exceed 2300 degrees F (1260 degrees C), this stain works well in glazes with and without zinc. The more stain you add to your glaze, dry clay, or slip, the darker the color will be.  How much stain you add it's ultimately up to each person's personal preferences.  Some useful (general) guidelines to keep in mind are that when using dark colors, you don't need to use as much stain as when using light colors.  So for black, dark blues or greens, 5-10% of the total weight is usually a good place to start.  For light colors, you should try 10-20%.  In the end, we recommend that you always do some testing in small batches, so you can identify the best mix for the “look” you're trying to achieve.  But this is the fun part of using stains!  So enjoy and have fun!
