Big-game fishing, often referred to as offshore game fishing, is a form of recreational blue-water fishing, targeting large fish known for their sporting qualities, size, beauty, and tenacity. Offshore fishing became possible with the advent of the personal motorized watercraft, following America's industrialization. This newfound freedom afforded families the ability to depart for the coast on the weekend and try their hand at reeling in a big game fish. As the vessels used for sport fishing became larger, longer-ranged, and more seaworthy, so did the sportsman's ability to pursue more exotic game.
