Safely screen everyday items by testing painted walls, vintage furniture, cabinets, doors, painted woodwork, and the exterior coatings of painted toys. It is also highly effective on peeling or chipped dishes, bricks, cement, plaster, and drywall. (Note: Tests for surface-available lead only; does not test the internal core of solid objects).
30-SECOND COLOR-CHANGE RESULTS & HIGH SENSITIVITY: Get clear, fast, and easy-to-read results at home without harsh laboratory chemicals. Simply dip the swab tip into the white vinegar as the activator (directed in the IFU, NOT included in this kit) and rub vigorously against the testing surface. Within 30 seconds, a pink or red color indicates soluble surface lead. Under controlled lab conditions, swabs detect surface lead levels as low as 10 µg.
PLUMBING, METALS & DUST SCREENING: While this product does not test water quality, it is an excellent tool for screening the exposed surfaces around your plumbing. Quickly test exposed lead solder on older water pipes, unsealed metal fixtures, and lead leaching from older enamel bathtubs and sinks. It is also highly effective for detecting lead dust on vinyl blinds and windowsills.
HOW TO TEST PAINTED SURFACES: Water-based and acrylic latex paints dry into dense protective films that can trap lead inside. To get an accurate reading on painted walls, cabinets, doors, or toys, you must deeply score or scrape the surface first. Ensure you cut through all topcoats to fully expose the underlying paint layers and base materials before swabbing.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR RESULTS & LIMITATIONS: A negative test indicates that no bioavailable, leachable surface lead was detected at the exact point of testing. It does not guarantee the item is entirely lead-free internally, nor does it certify the item is safe for children to mouth, chew, or ingest. Swabs cannot detect lead completely encapsulated beneath dense clear-coats, intact baked ceramic glazes, or alloyed deep inside solid plastics/metals.
This product is a qualitative rapid screening tool designed strictly to detect soluble, surface-available lead. It cannot determine the total Parts-Per-Million (ppm) of lead inside a solid object. The swabs cannot detect lead that is encapsulated beneath dense paint films, baked into intact ceramic dishes, or alloyed deep inside solid plastics or metal toys.
