Red-eyed tree frogs belong to the tree frogs family and in turn to the so-called leaf frog subfamily. Its name hints at the frog's main feature: the tropical animal has bright red bulging eyes. The large, protruding eyes have a bright red Iris and a vertical black pupil. Red-eyed tree frogs are further characterized by an unusual property: their thumbs can oppose the other fingers to form a proper grip hand. Their body is slim. Nevertheless, their legs are extremely long in relation to their body size. Therefore, younger frogs in particular appear to move clumsily. In their home, the tropical rain forests, they live on the twigs and branches of the tree crowns. Only when it has been raining a lot or during breeding season do they descend into the trees or even to the ground. They are also often encountered in villages, where they flock to the water sources.
