This extension cable allows you to extend a 15-pin SATA power connection by an additional 24 inches. Constructed with 20 AWG wire and premium high density black sleeving, this cable provides both the necessary current capacity for SATA drives and a clean, professional appearance. The injection molded connectors ensure reliable contact while maintaining a low profile for tight installations. Some of the wires have been left uncovered by sleeving and heatshrink to retain cable flexibility for ease of cable management. This cable is compliant with the SATA 3.3 specification by omitting the 3.3V rail on pins 1-3. In the updated SATA 3.3 standard, pin 3 (P3) was redefined from supplying 3.3V power to serving as the Power Disable (PWRDIS) control signal. When P3 is driven high (2.1V-3.6V), power to the drive circuitry is disabled. This feature was originally developed for enterprise and data center environments to allow remote power cycling of drives experiencing interface errors without physical removal. By leaving pins 1-3 disconnected, this cable prevents compatibility issues between newer enterprise drives with PWRDIS support and older ATX power supplies that continuously supply 3.3V on pin 3. Without this cable, affected drives would fail to spin up as they would interpret the constant 3.3V signal as a power disable command. Note that consumer SATA drives—both HDDs and SSDs—have never required the 3.3V rail for operation, as they regulate their internal 3.3V from the 5V rail provided on pins 7-9. The 24-inch length is ideal for routing power from the PSU to drives mounted in distant bays or builds where the PSU is positioned further from the drive cage.
