This mandrel is 7.5" long not including the tang and has a 1 5/8 x 1 7/8" tang that can be held in a vise. The steps are very handy for wider items since each one is the same size without a taper. This gives a more uniform size to your finished piece. The steps on this oval mandrel range from approximately 2-7/8" x 3-1/8" down to 1-7/8" x 2 1/8
